The Sound of Silence

The first part of the tour is over, and while we're organizing the new leg, all the team is back home enjoying some rest. Now that I have more time, I want to explore different directions, and in particular the notion of silence. I am sure you have noticed how the first few seconds of silence at the end of a track feel like they still belong to that track. To the best of my knowledge, the only work of importance ever composed in this field is the minute of silence played in solemn occasions, but I find the arrangement a bit basic. I would like to compose a silent album that would retain melodies, and mix the warm grain of analog silence and some sampled silence as well. Expect to hear something soon. Or not.

its like the nike spot, just do it.

I would use only nature sounds and mix them like you do in zoolook.

and please come to spain, my wife couldnt be with me in germany.

"Expect to hear something soon. Or not."

:D

That would be more than silent! :))

Budapest Aréna is famous for its good acustics of silence...maybe audience silence is good idea to put on album as a sample. :)

I agree with the opinion of gathering sound samples for an album, just like you did for many albums, especially on Zoolook.

Once again I hereby express my hope of exploring new territories (what is your brand :) on fields of compositions, artistic directions and...of course geographical territories! ;-)

Profitez bien de ce silence après tous ces bons moments passés ensemble. J'espère que les captations d'Alphacam se sont bien déroulées.
Difficile de travailler sur le silence à l'heure du DJing, ou des émissions qui craignent les "blancs".

I dont quite get what you are saying lol :)

How can an album be quite and have a melody? oh, unless you are going to record it with your synthesizers switched off..

Is this for real?

I am sure whatever you do, it will be awesome. I can not wait to hear or not hear your silent album.

Take care

Music of silence is the music that appears in our head when we don't listen to anything... It can be either music of a famous composer or the music coming from space, which the composer knows how to put into sounds... Though it was a nice joke of Jean Michel, it made me think for a while what is the essence of silence itself...

Anonyme a dit…

Thank you so much for your present in Liège. I traveled with me couple from Valencia (Spain) only to feel your music. It was like a mistic experience. In 1977, 9 years old, I listened first time Oxyène IV since the is seeing me. Silence is the essence and the essence is the heart, the love. Thank you again

Zwoekie a dit…

Better leave that to the experts.
Simon and Garfunkel. Hahaha.

But it would be great to see you create something outside your comfort zone.
Something minimalistic, dark with sonic extremities .
Like an earie piano/string piece followed by something with almost distorted industrial sounds, silence would play a important part as the contrast, the sonic equilibrium of the album
Listen to Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill OST) and you'll catch my drift

That is of course if you're up for it, or not.

Or you're just are bored and messing with your fans. The first option would be sooooooooooo more interesting.

Zwoekie a dit…

I think so too C-Jay

Ah, people who laugh the most during the day are likely to live longer.
So, we can enjoy Jean Michel's work even longer.
I'm glad he doesn't take himself too seriously as other artists do.
I'll bet he uses Bruno Bannani LOL!

N-joy the silence Jean Michel, hey and drop me and email while you're at it.

Au revoir,

Zwoekie

Jean Michel,

how about the music was played before Paris concert, replacing Waiting for Cousteau ?
Where is that music from?
From who?

Jean-Francois Charles a dit…

The minute of silence is surely the silent piece performed most often. I like it because the duration is actually quite variable. The other famous piece is John Cage's 4:33' - more complicated to organize (orchestra, conductor, etc.)

LJ.Isis a dit…

I have been told that, at the height of the Beatles' popularity in the UK, a radio DJ, for fun broadcast 3 minutes of radio silence announcing it as a new track by the Beatles. Record shops were inundated with queries as to when the track would be available to buy.
Look forwards to hearing more from you soon,
Love and hugs,
Linzi

Tommy a dit…

april fool or not, but the idea of sampling the silence is actually brilliant. SIlence is not just silence. Listen !
Listen to the silence of theatre before the play begins or to the silence before symphonic ocrhestra starts to play ot the silence in the forest. They are all different. Silenc eis not "vacuum". It still has some "noise", tat makes it different

Hi, Jean!
Now this news is something that I've been waiting for. You've brought along the promise of a new concept.
I truly believe that, despite being aware of the industry-imposed standards of 3 minute tracks (a subject of discussion you touched, I believe, at the time of release of Chronologie), you are capable of getting rid of many worn-out aspects of pop culture. They are already producing easy-to-digest music in huge quantities, you should follow your own path. You can do that.
