Message from Jean Michel Jarre management : RE DVD Houston

WE REALISE HOW MUCH YOU WERE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO THE HOUSTON CONCERT BEING AVAILABLE ON DVD, HOWEVER THE UPCOMING RELEASE BY FRANCIS DREYFUS MUSIC HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

DUE TO THE EVIDENT POOR QUALITY OF THE FILM, WHICH HAS NOT BEEN RESTORED OR UPGRADED TO TODAY'S DIGITAL STANDARDS, NOR AT ALL TO A LEVEL OF A PRODUCT THAT JEAN MICHEL JARRE COULD BE ARTISTICALLY SATISFIED WITH, THE DVD, AS F.D.M. PLANNED TO RELEASE IT, WOULD HAVE DONE MORE HARM THAN JUSTICE TO WHAT REMAINS A MILESTONE EVENT.

A MERE DVD COPY OF THE VHS FORMAT, WHERE THE ORIGINAL IMAGES AND SOUND ARE FAR FROM OPTIMUM, WHERE NO BONUS NOR EXTRAS ARE PROPOSED, WITH ARTWORK THAT LACKED PUNCH...WOULD HAVE LED TO A LESS THAN MEDIOCRE PRODUCT SOLD AT NORMAL PRICE.

MOREOVER, IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERLINE THAT JEAN MICHEL JARRE WAS NOT CONSULTED OR INFORMED OF THE RELEASE BY F.D.M., THIS IN ITSELF IS SUFFICIENT TO OPPOSE IT.

AS YOU KNOW, JEAN MICHEL JARRE TAKES TOO MUCH PRIDE IN HIS WORK AND CARE IN HIS CREATION, TO ALLOW IT, AND YOU, TO BE EXPLOITED, WITHOUT THE NECESSARY INVESTMENT OF OFFERING THE BEST STANDARD POSSIBLE.

WE THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR CONTINOUS SUPPORT AND UNDERSTANDING, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CASE.

I think this was the right step. We want quality pictures and quality sounds and maybe some extras.
I hope Dreyfus Music or Jarre will digital restore the movies (ALL OF THEM) that we can see them in future.

I agree that you were right to stop this release. It looked shoddy, almost like a bootleg and discredits your catalogue.

But I think you really need to sort out the release of your back catalogue onto DVD (and Blu Ray for post-beijing). The fans are eager to relive these events and it doesn't seem to make sense that both la defense / houston were cancelled beyond the lack of effort the dreyfus releases would have had.

So please release something soon - if you are able to cancel dreyfus releases it follows you are able to release these yourself, so why not?

best wishes,

Col.

I do not think that was for both the poor quality. Okay, do not record in 5.1 sound, but the original stereo sound is not bad. The images will not be so bad. What's wrong with something that is sold at low prices, provided they can see and hear with a minimum of quality, though not reached the exacting standards today?

It makes sense. The VHS version is just...urgh..., a 1:1 DVD copy would be ridiculous.

Bonsoir Jean Michel,

Décision correcte. JMJ reste JMJ.

Uhmm... I really am not glad to hear about this, and I hope there will be any kind of DVD release soon. Made by anyone!

I guess there are quite a bit of fans in a similar position.

I am in a country where the only way possible to see an event like Houston was thru a low quality pirated VHS copy.

I still have this tape, but I don't have a working VHS player any more. I have a DVD player, and now I have internet and online shopping, and I can order stuff, and I started buying originals that I like.

So, I would buy it, and watch it again and again, no matter the quality of the medium, because the event and the music was good!

Something which is good and worth it can be easily recognized even throug a low signal radio transmission in the mountains.

Because I don't have a VHS player any more, and because I don't see a need to buy another one, I was not able to watch Houston for 10 years now, and would really like to see it again from time to time.

I would appreciate any kind of DVD, since any type of 1:1 VHS - DVD copy made professionaly is 100 times better than the 1:1 VHS - VHS home made copy I had.

Do you honestly think that all of the 3 million viewers that were in Houston and watching and hearing from the distance - were able to see and hear the pristine sound and video quality? I guess not. But still they were there.

You shouldn't always look on the commercial side of the things.

I am in complete agreement with VVA on this. My last complete viewing of the Houston concert was back when Bravo broadcast it. If one were to draw parallels then there would be no Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and Procol Harum videos in existence! Is Jarre not a cultural/music icon also?
I for one still own very high grade video gear from beta to super vhs. I am sure there are many other videophiles out there quite willing to pre/post process the entire production for much less than standard commercial cost.I bet any one of the French Media based educational institutions would love to take up the torch and run with it for free. F Dreyfuss Music needs a reality check. JMJ needs to do a "top-down" check, and realize many fans don't expect diamonds from a lump of coal.
Originality is the pure essence of creation.
The temptation to become a video pirate now rears it's head.

Qu'el penji pirata al youtube!

eastcoasthiker a dit…

One might argue to YouTube being blatant piracy I guess. These arguments are best left to the powers that be. Jarre's management is acting in a manner befitting a Vampire. When mirrored, they fail to see the image creativity and technology has already produced, and can be reproduced using the same, only in a better and higher quality format.
I for one would be willing to put more than a crisp Cinquante on the counter for that video, as long as it isn't pirated.
I am not alone either.
F Dreyfus music is doing the Company, Jarre fans, and ultimately JMJ and his family a great disservice for not at least releasing the original for sale.
Fans judge the Artist(s).

One word to F Dreyfus Music.

"Dulce et decorum est".

Do you do BLU, Jean Michel? I do, and trust me, it's an amazing experience. I'am one of the biggest fans of yours here in Poland and I am really hungry to see your spectacular performances in 1080p! Don't make me wait any longer, please feed my eyes and ears with your Blu ray releases. PLEASE :-)

Best regards,

Memphis

I want perfection. TrueHD Sound and 1080p. Usually JMJ is sate-of-the-art. Why do we have to wait for HD releases? I want Blu-Ray...I think a lot of fans would like to pay the price for it
